![]() ![]() I bought The Very Best because I noticed that it was DR13 on the loudness-wars database, vs. I received The Very Best of Foreigner (Atlantic # 7567-80505-2 XV, purchased from a seller in the Netherlands) a few days ago and informally compared it at home this afternoon to the 2002 Atlantic/Rhino Complete Greatest Hits comp (# R2 78266), which I owned. I would like to see if my version differs from yours. Also, if you could post peak levels, that would be helpful as well. Oh, and could you post here the dynamic range measures of the tracks on your Netherland's version? I would indeed like to see how the tracks compare individually to those which has been posted in Dynamic Range Database. The former actual sounds pretty good but it is more compressed than the European issue you now have. Oddly, The Very Best of.and Beyond was released in the same year as The Very Best of. If only all the individual albums were remastered in this way. Moreover, to me, the tracks on this collection sound better than what was released on CD in the 80s, the Diament mastering, that is. I wanted to try it as well for its tremendous dynamic range, and found it, as you did, to sound more akin to the original vinyl than anything else I had heard on CD, including the MFSLs of the second and third albums. These are good songs for a long drive anyway.Ĭlick to expand. It seems that a lot of folks did not know about this release since it was European. The Rhino will be assigned to the car for now, where the compression will matter less. At any rate, it takes its place in the collection, and I am enjoying hearing Foreigner as I have never heard it before. The catalog numbers are the same, but Discogs seems not to know of the release that I have. My copy of The Very Best measures DR12 using TT-DR Offline, and the peaks and RMS figures differ from those posted for the DR13 one listed on the loudness-wars database. The greater compression and uniform loudness of the Rhino were evident. It surprised me a couple of time with the way it soars. The Very Best sounds like I remember Foreigner sounding on LP, it gets better as it is cranked, and it did not bore or fatigue me. ![]() I intend to report back on it as soon as possible. I am due to receive another Foreigner compilation soon, The Very Best of Foreigner.and Beyond, which came out the same year as the similarly named European compilation. If only I had kept my original vinyl, not to mention my beloved Pioneer Graphite speakers. The MoFi discs are good and are my go-to's when I want to listen to the original albums, but still, there is something about them that is a bit off. ![]() In that regard, the later Inglot remasters are now in my outbox they never sounded right to me. It makes me wish that whoever tackled this set had remastered the entire lot. I conclude that The Very Best of compilation is one heck of a disc containing some of the finest sounding versions of Foreigner's hits I have heard on CD. Needless to say, I like the compilation's version a lot better. I am just going to say, the song on the compilation is totally gritty but much smoother on the MoFi. I went on to compare Hot Blooded from The Very Best of to the same on the Original Master Recording (Red Book layer) of Double Vision. In fact, I truly like, and may actually prefer, the more muscular, rawer sound presented on The Very Best of. In so far as detail is concerned, the Original Master Recording does win out, but that does not necessarily mean I find it superior. The same can be said for the synthesizer components on the song Head Games. For instance, the guitar work on the intro to Women is somewhat muted on the earliest disc, but quite nicely detailed on the two later releases. In any case, what stood out to me was just how much closer the cuts on the 1992 compilation sounded to the Original Master Recording than to the 80s disc. ![]() It is important to realize Head Games, the album, is not one of the better recorded out there, but then again, its rough-around-the-edges sound is what made it so appealing back in the late 70s when too much overly produced music abounded. Initially, I compared Women and Head Games from this set to the same from the 1980s mastered album Head Games and from that album's recent Original Master Recording (Red Book layer). I have been comparing some of the tracks on the 1992 European compilation The Very Best of Foreigner with counterparts on original albums. ![]()
